Is speeding reading lessons a must in college?
I have decided to major in history and was wondering if anybody had any advice about what to expect and if speed reading lessons , are a good idea?
I don’t know that speed reading lessons are a must, but I can’t imagine they would hurt either.
I was an English major and did pleeeeeenty of reading and occassionally felt overwhelmed by it. Honestly, I rarely did all of the reading for a class. You can skim, google/sparknote, read footnotes, etc. There are lots of ways to dodge reading everything without losing content and knowledge. Go to class every day and take good notes and the reading will make more sense (and thus be easier to complete) and be slightly less crucial to finish on time.
I know several history majors whose reading loads rivaled or exceeded my own. My advice (and I’m sure they would echo this) is to stay on top of your reading. As soon as you fall behind on reading, it’s damn near impossible to catch up. Even if you can’t read your entire assignment – read as much as possible and be well-versed or at least familiar with the information your instructor talks about the most or says directly is important to know for essays and tests.
A good way to know ahead of time how demanding a class will be is to check out ratemyprofessor.com and a lot of the time people will make comments about the pace of a class and if the teacher expected a lot from students in terms of reading, writing assignments, tests, etc.
Hope that helps. Good luck!
