Take Action to Preserve Privacy
As anyone who has been paying any attention knows, privacy, freedom of movement, and freedom of association have been severely undermined in response to drug prohibition, and more recently, the War on Terror. In fact, the United States is engaged in a high speed “race to the bottom” with international compeditors like the UK, Russia, and China. Overall, “new democracies” are improving their human rights records, while existing liberal states are increasingly cracking down on liberty in the name of security. Why is this?
Surely there are many factors, but the most obvious is simply experience. Citizens of recently liberalized states, such as those of eastern Europe, often have first hand knowledge of the many dangers a “security state” inevitably brings. In the historically more free US and western Europe, the vast majority of individuals have little or no direct experience with tyranny. They assume that such atrocities could never happen in their own back yard, and thus most Americans and Europeans incorrectly believe that one of two other outcomes will result:
1. Increasing state intervention in one area of life will not spill over into others. Supporters of this view see each political and social issue in a vacuum, disconnected from all others. This is the typical neoconservative view.
2. State intervention will indeed affect other areas of life, but only for the better. Totalitarianism is the answer, proponents argue, but it was simply carried out incorrectly in country X, by the wrong administrators. This, of course, is the overtly socialist viewpoint.
As educated, informed people, readers will recognize that Jefferson and Franklin were right when they said that freedom and liberty must be paid for with eternal vigilance, and that those who would give up a little liberty for a little security deserve -and will get- neither. I hate to write more doom-and-gloom rhetoric, as I know readers have seen many such articles already. However, it was necessary to set the stage for the real point of this article, which is to bring a message of hope, and to offer some simple, concrete steps you can take to change the political climate, at least in America, for the better.
Downsize DC, Restore the Republic
As we all know, government is the complete and total antithesis of liberty. George Washington himself noted that government is not eloquence and reason, ie, persuasion, but rather force. Be that as it may, the logical solution to the force and abuse problem is to reduce the size and scope of government, especially on the federal level. The task is large, but getting involved is easy! Below are a couple of the easiest and best ways to make a real change for the better, both for yourself, and those you love. I am involved with both of the featured organizations to one degree or another, and each has a proven track record of staving off bad laws and/or repealing existing evil legislation and anti-freedom mindsets.
DownsizeDC.org-
This non partisan, pro liberty electronic lobbying system makes it very easy to contact your Senators and Congressperson to let them know where you stand on today’s pressing legislative issues. The website’s parent organization has been made famous for its Read The Bills Act, which would force all legislators to read each bill in its entirety, or have it read aloud to them prior to a vote. The purpose of such a requirement would be to eliminate pork barrel spending, enforce accountability, and make legislative decision-making more transparent to the public. The site also features a number of campaigns more directly related to privacy and honest wealth creation issues. Some of them include a repeal of the USAPATRIOT Act, the RealID initiative, and the National Animal ID System (NAIS).
“DC Downsizers,” as they are called, have been influential in stalling the latter two programs, in conjunction with other advocacy groups. They are really quite effective! check out DownsizeDC.org and join the tens of thousands of liberty lovers from all walks of life who are uniting to make a difference in federal policy!
The Free State Project-
Are you the kind of principled, rugged individualist who understands that the first step toward freedom starts with you? If so, would you move to a new place to live and work with other friendly, like-minded people, all while working to reduce the size and scope of government? If so, the Free State Project might be what you’re looking for. Hundreds of activists, businesspeople, and voters are already in the “Free State” of New Hampshire, and over one thousand more have pledged to make the move over the course of this year.
Even with only a fraction of the desired total (approximately 20,000) in the state, real progress is being made. Regulations on home schooling have been reduced, RealID has been rejected in the state legislature, and the rumblings of marijuana legalization are growing louder every day. Still, much progress still needs to be made, and too many residents and legislators are stuck in a big government mindset. New Hampshire is truly an exciting place for pro liberty activism. Let’s work together to turn the course of statism into the blessings of liberty and prosperity. Join today!
