How Speed (Fast) Thinking Kills Stress
Scientific American magazine has been in business since 1845 commenting
on new inventions and research. It is the standard source for writers on scientific
subjects to discover new research.
They were the first to write about Howe’s Cotton Gin, Morse’s telegraph, Bell’s telephone, and Edison’s light and phonograph. You can check them out at
www.sciam.com When they endorse new research, it is the real deal.
So What
On February, 2009 Sci Am wrote an article called – “Rapid Thinking Makes
People Happy – Accelerated Thoughts.” The Bottom-Line is the faster you
think – mentally process information – the stronger your immune system,
better your mood, and larger your memory retention.
Picture this: driving your car from NYC to L.A. at 30 mph. Wait – you will
get there, but the stress from other cars giving you their horn will require
a year with a therapist.
When you consciously choose to speed-up your reading, writing, and thinking,
from passive-to-active, you improve your Productivity. One-more-once: the
faster you read-write (type) and think, the more productive you become in
school and career. Speed defeats Chronic Stress – repetitious thinking.
Research
The original research on Speed was done by Emily Pronin at Princeton, and Daniel M. Wegner, at Harvard, and published in the journal, Association For Psychological
Science.
How
The secret is to use your volition (will power) to choose to speed up what you are
doing from slow or neutral (passive), to fast-faster-fastest. Examples: In the next five-minutes generate (record by pen or typing) ten (10) problem-solving ideas about How to stop a baby from crying.
Sounds stupid? How about naming ten famous American Generals? How many U.S. states can you name in five-minutes? What about NY Stock Exchange companies?
The goal is to accelerate your information processing skills in order to speed up your mind-and-body. There appears to be a direct link between speedy mental-activities, and how you feel and behave. To raise your I.Q. from normal to outstanding, according to this research – choose to think faster.
Other Examples
You can raise your information-processing speed by reading a series of ideas
on your computer at a brisk-pace. How about watch a TV or DVD on fast-forward?
Yes, that works too.
When compared to participants watching video at normal speed, your brainwaves showed a difference. Speed up, and your brain is active in High-Beta cycles per second; standard tv put us in Alpha Hz (cycles per second) relaxed and in neutral.
The best of all methods of raising your information-processing speed is to read
text using a hand-held laser Pacer underlining the words of the sentences. The
result is to boost your energy, and improve your mood to positive.
Why? You engage your peripheral vision, instead of your snail slow foveal (central)
vision. You accelerate from an average of 150-200 words per minute, to 600-
750 wpm. speed reading jump-starts multiple brain and body structures, not just your pre-frontal cortex.
Thinking faster accesses a burst of Positive Emotions. For those who want more
scientific answers – speed thinking excites Dopamine activity, reward and pleasure.
Google: Ventral-Tegmental Area, Caudate Nucleus, and Dopamine.
Finally
Science does not have an answer yet, why Speed affects your mood. The research
shows a clear pattern, but why and how is still a mystery. Do you have to wait
ten years to gain the brain benefits?
Start today speeding up your personal productivity by using one or more of the cited examples. It absolutely works.
Duchenne Smile
Can you stop once an hour for ten (10) seconds to put a special smile on your face?
Why? Because a ten-second Duchenne Smile improves your mental attitude, reduces
anxiety, and causes your breathing to improve by reaching your entire body.
French neurologist, Guillaume Dechenne (1806-1875) did the original research
on Smiling and its effect on the body. He found that a real (genuine) smile is
caused by the muscles lateral to your lips and mouth called Risorius.
The second set of muscles in a authentic smile (Duchenne Smile) is at the sides of
your eyes and called Pars Lateralis. There is a total of 12 muscles used to smile,
one more than to frown. Note: a real smile causes Crow’s Feet next to each eye.
Who cares that the Zygomatic Major muscles raises the corner of the mouth
to smile, while the Orbicularis Oculi raises the cheeks to form Crow’s Feet
around your eyes? Medical students.
Endwords
If you would add one simple new ritual to your day’s activities – putting a
Duchenne Smile (eyes-and-mouth) for 10 seconds each working hour, you
will activating your body and mind for accelerated energy and positive mood.
We recommended the Duchenne to both students and executives and received
overwhelming confirmation of the power of your Smile. Test the proposition
and discover your own results. There is nothing to buy, and everything to prove.
Speed Reading is the real deal.
Would it improve your competitiveness at school and career to own the skill
of reading and remember three (3) books, articles, and reports in the time your
peers can hardly finish one? Ask us how to bring out the best in yourself.
See ya,
