good speed reading techniques?

i am at the start of my one week of study leave, next week i will be be taking my GCSE exams and i want to try and absorb as much information as i can for some decent grades.
the other week i was watching derren brown’s trick or treat and he taught this man how to speed read through book as absorb an incredible ammount of information tht cause him to come second in this big quiz, after watching that i know there is a chance of this working so i ould like to give it a try.
does anyone know any good proffessional tips for speed reading.

Practise – the more you read the faster it becomes. Try holding the page away from you so that you can take in a line at a time, and move quiclkly through paragraphs. Let your eye travel down the middle of the page and you will find you are getting most of the words. If properly written you will get the gist of a pargraph quite quickly and be able to work out if it is helpful to your research. Be selective – you don’t need to read everything cover to cover – check the relevant bits from the contents, or from the index – that’s what they are there for. Always have a pencil in your hand when reading and jot down notes (not all over the book – that’s a hanging offence – and don’t underline stuff in text books or library works which is distracting – another reader may not be interested in what you are). Keep your notes on file paper – some people prefer cards but I think that’s all going over the top. What you want to do is distill the relevant information into one place so you can re-read or shuffle about, without having to go back to the text all the time – this becomes invaluable for revision or when planning an essay. Stick at it and you will find your speed improves. Don’t try this technique for English Literature though.
