How can I deal with fast reading requiring multiple readings?

I am incredibly fast, but I generally can’t do much for analysis unless I go back through another two or three times. This is obnoxious-I want to move on by then! Life is short! I suppose I’d sacrifice a bit of speed for better comprehension, but I’ve been at about this speed since I began, so I don’t know how to go about fixing this. I know the general idea, I guess I skim, and I’ll be able to pass a test on the material, but I can’t internalize it at that rate and so it is worth very little.

You need to learn to SKIM effectively. You don’t need to slow all the way down so that everything sinks in the first time, but you do need to slow down enough that you can keep a highlighter poised over the page, and swipe it across when you see something good. Learn to skip introductory phrases in articles (Dr. Smith of University of Blah blah blah), and phrases like cordial greetings in dialog.

However, if you are not retaining anything at all, you need to just start all over and train yourself to read more slowly.

Reading in bed works for me, or on the couch with some tea. Get in a relaxed environment – not at school in the lunchroom or something. If you have to read at school, at least go to a quiet zone like the library.
