California sea lions can swim as fast as 40.-km/h. Suppose a sea lion begins to chase a fish at this speed when the fish is 60m away. The fish, of course, does not wait, and swims away at a speed 16km/h. How long would it take the sea lion to catch the fish?

Just find the difference in speed, which is the rate at which the distance between them is decreasing: 40 km/h – 16 km/h = 24 km/h.

Now convert it to a useful speed (m/s): 24 km/h * 1000m/km*1h/3600s= 6.667 m/s

Now, just divide the distance by the velocity to find the time: 60 m/(6.667 m/s) = 9 seconds.
